I have just seen HP's (hewlett packard not the sauce) new advertisement. It shows a tissue being put in the bin ... then can't remember the exact phrase but on the lines of you wouldn't reuse a tissue so don't reuse ink cartridges and has the nerve to boast about there products being 100% new ....... Are they MAD! Perhaps they should sack their advertising team and put some money into a recycling scheme ... And another thing have they never heard of hankies!

Moan over ....

You're quite right to moan. These days printers especially are being seen as 'throw away' items. Most printers cost less then their consumables. The printer companies make more money selling the cartridges than they do selling the printer.

We have a Samsung CLP500 which is a colour Laser. It takes 4 colour cartridges, a drum and a belt. Add them together and they cost more than a new printer ! Maddness...

We had the same thing with our printer, it's an Epson (I think) 4 different colour cartridges cost 40 quid. As we don't use the printer very often, just the odd letter etc, the cartridges dried up in less than 2 months. It's been disconnected now.

It is maddness indeed! I get my ink from premier-ink and every time they send it out they send a post paid recycle envelope to send back the old cartridge for recycling, HP should include one with every cartridge sold!

That's interesting Tanya, I bought four replacement cartridges from Argos two months ago, before I discovered PI, genuine HP and no envelopes enclosed.

I've been punching holes in Canon cartridges and refilling them for years. But Canon have now got wise to this, and affixed a chip which wears out gradually. When the chip is busted, the whole printer, including the scanner, refuses to work.

Another cruddy company I don't wish to have to deal with again.

If you want to make them sit up and take notice, write them a letter thanking them for their latest advertisement highlighting their ecological policy and informing them that your company will no longer be using their products as a consequence.

I've got a Konica-Minolta colour laser printer in the office here - it seems very well built and certainly excellent value for the two hundred pounds or so it cost. Somewhere in the web interface there is choice of action for "toner low" and "toner empty". Setting it to continue regardless is one option. Curiously, my printer has been operating in a completely satisfactory way despite having being "out of toner" for the best part of a year ...

we've got a CISS system for our printer which provides a continuous flow of ink so the cartridges never have to be changed
