Do the forum logs keep a record of the rates of activity?
I think it would be interesting to see a graph of usage against time; see how fast the forum has been growing, stuff like that.
Is this possible?

I think you would need to ask Jim'll or Satin, but given the impending move for the forum to a new home I suspect that they will be up to their eyeballs in work with that for a while.
(And that is even if the forum software does such stuff of course )
edited sometime later to add:
For what it is worth, 64 new members have joined since 1st December. The software didn't tell me that, I counted them the slow and tedious way. I am not offering to do it again!

Well, there is no rush for it, but it might be worth thinking about if the logs are likely to get lost in the move, and making sure they don't.
I don't know what the official connection (if any) is between this forum and the charity, but this forum is a good resource to help anyone to reduce their carbon footprint; and that, I think is one of the objects of the charity.
And a nice pretty line showing how well we are doing that looks good in the manifesto.

65 now.
But joining is one thing.
Reading and contributing are something else again.

Why not just subtract 4029 from 4094?

Of course, having thought about it, most of it is a silly question: of course there is a record of how much posting has happened: every post says when it was posted.
I could find it myself if I could get more than 20 answers out of the search engine at a time.
Not sure if there is a log of how many people are just looking though.

If you look at the posts under topic headings, there is a bit next to author that says views? How many people have looked? Is this what you mean? If not be gentle....

Certainly in the region of what I mean. I clearly skipped "bleedin' obvious 101".
Though quite how to extract this information & put it into a graph is a more tricky question.
With more than 316,000 articles, I'm damn sure not doing it by hand.

Did any of the guru's come up with an answer on this?
I think the graphs could be useful to monitor the growth of the forum, and if you consider that the forum is a valuable information resource, and you've got some figures to show how useful it has been giving out advise and help, then it can be held up as a charitable achievement, and credited to the good works of the BGI.

I've raised the question with them that may know. As for the BGI, that and the forum are completely independent (and must remain so: the forum is part of Newhouse Farm which is a commercial operation), so I don't think we can use the forum stats to promote the charity. It would still be interesting to see them though.

If you get me the numbers, I'll turn them into graphs if you like.
Don't know if this helps at all:

The information isn't available to any of the admin team (without doing it the hard way). It may be available to the server hosts, but although the information would be interesting I don't think that it would be useful enough to justify asking them to provide it.
I suspect restrospective data would simply reveal the pattern of the INEBG series, and not much more. However, it may be worth collecting data from hereon in, which would be more easily done simply by noting down number of posts, users etc on a weekly/monthly basis. I think the only additional data I have over you is number of topics per day, though I can provide that if you want.
One thing you could do - if you find a post from a particular date, you can check its post number and plot this as total number for that date. These numbers don't seem to line up closely but should give the trend for the past. (Though not comparable with the future if you take future readings from the figure at the bottom of the forum.)
Have I put you off yet?

Is there any way to increase the number of search results displaid on each page?
It is not difficult to pull numbers off a page, but if each page has only 20 results at a time it would be far too tedious...
..unless I could get a robot to do it.
Neither option should actually be very difficult, they're both just out of my field.

As far as I can see, no - not easily, at any rate.
Is your plan to list all forum posts, a page at a time? I may be missing something obvious, but how do you do that?
Even if you could return 200 posts at a time it would take nearly 2000 pages. One thing to bear in mind is that the number of posts returned for you wouldn't equal the total number, as there are a few 'hidden' areas. Not that that should be a problem for the purposes of showing trends.

Now that would be silly wouldn't it.
If you do a search, it returns the results as a table, including the time & date of each post.
Take that table, stuff it into a spreadsheet and out pops a graph.
Generally it then takes several hours of -ing about to actually get the graph to show the data you are trying to show...
It doesn't matter a jot if there are thousands of posts on the page, that is why the good lord gave us silicon. The machine would crunch them in seconds.

I meant with the page length being determined by the new figure for search items listed.
But what are your search terms? How do you get it to include all posts?

Good question. Best idea I've got is to plot the postings over time for the most active posters.
It wouldn't be entirely accurate, but it would give a fair idea.
