Has fianlly got rid of his 'orrible patio heaters that there is a hoooge snowball in my world...
I'd like to think it's cos I've been nagging him but more likely good ol fashioned sibling rivalry... hey ho, however!!!

Yay for Lotty's brother
I've ben thinking recently about how the jet-setter who reduces their long-haul flights from two a year to one a year is doing more to help the environment than the dyed-in-the-wool environmentalist who works out a way of saving yet another few units of electricity a week.
This isn't meant to belittle the achievements of the deeper greens by any means - the point is that we shouldn't think that we're getting nowhere because of the number of people who fly regularly (for instance). If enough people change from being very ungreen to being a little bit less ungreen, the difference will still be enormous.
It's also the reason why this forum should welcome and embrace everyone who wants to make a difference, however far along the green path they are.

I am currently working my way through the two main Transition Town books, and maybe I am being optimistic , but you have to be, otherwise we are all doomed. I just wish there was a short brief leaflet which could be given out, to bring more people on board.

a couple of weeks back when i was camping i saw a bundle of carrier bags on the cliff near our pitch - my first instinct was that it was some-one elses problem they wernt my bags - then i reminded my self that the major reason i was there was to watch the dolphins and these bags could kill them - so much to everyones amusement - (there was no dignity involved ) i climbed over the barrier onto the cliff to get them.Turned out they were those (so called) eco friendly ones - so possibly not - but hey.

this is one reason I am not keen on eco friendly(?) plastic carrier bags as people then think it is OK to dump their rubbish. I prefer plastic bags which can be re-used.

I think they still take quite a long time to decompose so in the meantime they can still kill dolphins.
Well done you!
And rue_d_etropal is quite right of course. Re-use is far better than replace.

hah yes, we have drummed that so much into our guests that they shove their placcy bags in the bag drawer..
cautionary tale though - don't do that with the " ëco" ones, on clearing out the drawer recently we found a shredded mess, convinced ourselves that we had mice again and cleaned like billy o - then discovered that the shredded bags were the biodegradable variety - made a helluver mess though

I wondered whether the decomposable ones floating about in the sea
would still be potentially dangerous - how long do they take to de-compose.?
To be honest I,m pretty sure I know which group they came from and sadly i think they would have been dumped either way.The thing is though thanks in a large part too this forum,- where once i would have probably subconsciousely thought -it doesnt belong to me its not my responsability to clear up after others - now i know that it is - and there is a bigger picture - the other people camping with me know that too - they may have laughed at my attempts to fence climb but the message about the dolphins went in - thats what we were all there for -so my answer is no - dont give up - you may feel in the big scale of things your efforts are wasted, but in reality theyre not, everything you do could spark a chain reaction.

I used to work at Somerfield when I lived in Newquay and the bags that decompose go suprisingly quick.
I'd have to repack shopping for customers that had gone outside to catch the bus put there shopping down on the wet floor only to find the bottom of the bag had gone.

Basically, the answer to the original question is - why should I give up my green way of life because others don't want to join me? It's my way of life. If others want to do differently, fair enough. That's their choice.

indeed Florence, there are many shades of green, it is merely a matter of discovering and adopting the way of life that best suits your conscience

I have just spent a day, on a market stall, trying to get interest in an idea for a Green Shop in our town. I think even some of original supporters are giving up, but I still feel the idea is too important to drop.
One of the problems I have with democracy is that if the majority say 'drive over the cliff' then we all die. It is up to the minority, who have discovered a problem to keep everyone informed, and hope that more people will realise you are right. Unfortunately democracy is seen as an end, not a meens to an end.

As an analytical question, what would a Green Shop do? What would/ could it achieve?

Do I honestly believe that if everyone in Britain turned "green" it would save the planet? No. I see too much of the corruption of money in big business worldwide to believe that. Despite all of the promises and targets, they are going to continue to use precious resources and screw up our planet.
Does that mean that we should all give up and go home? Certainly not.
Firstly, if when staring a huge obstacle in the face we give up, then we've already lost. Even the smallest effort is better than no effort at all.
Secondly, as the earth's resources are plundered and commodities get rarer and more expensive, those of us that can live by more self-sufficient means will be better positioned to adapt.

Green Shop? I use that term as that is what we originally coined to get a group together. The name we are running under while we plan is 'One Planet Café' .
Some want a shop where local and Fair Trade products can be bought. I want to include local art and craft including my own .
For me the most important feature is somewhere for local eco minded people can meet and exchange ideas, and somewhere to get eco advice. Since reading the Transition books, I see it as an important project to kick start a local Transition Initiative.
