Here’s they claim on these news. Killing the whales will help bring up the fish population. They call it "ecosystem managing."
What do you think ???

That's strange. I got exactly the opposite impression from the article - I read it as saying killing whales will not increase fish stocks.

billy rhomboid was right the article was saying that that is the excuse the
pro whalers will be presenting to get the ban lifted.Like the excuse they,ve been using recently saying the ones they kill now are for research
purposes - meanwhile in Japan frozen whale meat is being stockpiled as no-one actually wants to eat it on this scale it is sport.

This is different from the traditional need based hunting of small remote groups where a whale or 2 provided meat, heat and light as a necessaty for survival -

The only species guilty of over fishing is the human one - this combined with global warming and changes in the gulf stream is also affecting our sea bird populations but i suspect the people for whom whale hunting is a sport wont be too bothered about that either.

The problem is with woefully short sighted management of fish stocks. The waste due to by catch is shameful. In Britain the Marine Bill will have a minimal local effect, long line fishing will shift the problem elsewhere affecting protected marine species.

There are published lists of alternative fish to eat in order to elevate the stress on cod, tuna etc.

Personally I see it as a moral stance and consequently have now removed fish from my diet.

Not just Britain, I don't suppose.
One of the worst examples of watse I've seen (on TV) was about a boat hunting for Dover sole, which is protected so they cannot fish for it.
But they can't help it if they "accidentally" catch it, and they're allowed to land sole up to 10% of their total catch. So of course they throw away whatever they catch until they've got the full 10%.

I think fishing boats should bring home everything they catch, even (starfish and worms).
This would force them to focus, and find a better market than the seagulls for the waste.

Long line fishing is probably the best option available.

When will we learn to stop meddling?

I agree with hairyloon that they should land every thing they catch.

I heard an interesting sound-bite today

We are a society skilled in turning living things into dead things and calling it economic growth
