Hi all,

We have just done of first trial of soap nuts and was happy with the results in regards to the clean, but my partner wants the washing to smell nice too.

Any ideas for this? We did put some essential oils in on a cloth, but that didn't do anything.

Spray perfume on it? Keep sachets of nice smelling herbs in your clothes drawers?

When we first switched to soapnuts, we found it odd at first that the clean washing didn't smell of anything, and kept worrying whether it was really clean - but that was just because we have been conditioned (no pun intended) to associate clean with those artificial smells.
After we had been using soap nuts for a while we became really sensitive to the 'nice' smell of normal washing powders etc. When my neighbours hang their washing out we can smell it from several gardens away, and all that 'Spring freshness' just smells like chemicals to us.
Likewise air-fresheners and all that.

My advice would be do nothing, you will soon get used to the fact that clean clothes do not smell like Alpine meadows or lavender.

In my opinion one of the best smells in the world is line dried washing - so pop them on the line when they come out of the machine and you won't miss the grotty artificial scents of days gone by

Alternatively I know some folk pop a few drops of essential oil into the wash..

When i'm using soapnuts, i put 5 drops of essential oil in the laundry softener compartment in the drawer - depending on what i'm washing depends on the choice of oil, DH doesn't much like lavender in his work clothes wash

I have also been using lavander (much to DH disgust) - did try lemon oil as I love the smell, but it seems to have left dodgy looking yellow stains on teh washing...boo hiss! Just the towels though so I can live with that. Guess I won't be using that again.

how do i buy soap nuts?
Can you get them in NZ?
They sound fab,
We just found a wonderful lady in Tauranga NZ who makes her own soap etc. We got some and used it the first time 2day. Yummy, I smell like calendular and lemongrass. Used the soap to wash my hair and it is SOOO soft.
