Hello not sure if this should go in the Whats on Section but have put it here anyway...

Have discovered these fab people, courtesy of an old magazine in the Hospice shop:

http://www.cornwallwildlifetrust.org.uk/

For anybody lucky enough to be down this way (that includes me!! yay!!) they have some amazing events. We are all going to the basking shark and whale watch next weekend..sounds amazing

http://www.cornwallwildlifetrust.org.uk/whatson/events_pages/Whale_dolphin_and_basking_shark_watch.htm

Weather permitting of course

They also do a ferry ride to Isles of Scilly to watch for whales and sharks - have put it on my birthday list.

Hi Cornwall Jo,

Aren't the Wildlife Trusts amazing?! I used to volunteer for the Berks, Bucks and Oxon branch, and the community and school programs they did were brilliant. Since moving back to London, I haven't been volunteering anymore, but I must get in touch with the London Trust! I hear they do amazing bat walks.

CJ there are bats all over the place down here! Sitting out in the garden at dusk / after dark for any length of time and I guarantee you'll see them. Particularly where you are - you should definitely see them round and about.

Plus if you can cope with the crowds, when it's high tide you'll often see seals in St Ives harbour, and sometimes there's a pod of dolphins around early evening jumping around (literally!) just outside the harbour. It's worth a look if you can cope with the people as well!

Now MrCj said he saw a bat the other evening..I shall go and see later.

I love St Ives but hate the crowds so shall wait until later in the year!

We are just finding the route to the shark watch tomorrow. Seems to be just south of Lands End. If you hit the sea you have gone too far!! Very remote and wild and windswept..heeehee

Hello!
I used to volunteer for the Berks Bucks & Oxon Wildlife Trust as well!
As for bats, they are fantastic - if you are interested, you can pick up a bog standard bat detector reasonably cheaply these days (might get them second hand from somewhere?). They are great when you are out and about in the evening / night, or just sitting in your garden at dusk with a glass of wine. You can hear them echolocating all over the place, even if you can't see them - you can even hear the exact moment when they pin-point a bug and chomp it up.
Have fun in Cornwall - my brother in law lives down there and he loves the wildlife there.

Adam do you know Cathie Hasler, if you do, say hi to her from me (Fiona Sharp) ... She used to work in Wales for the RSPB and then for Keep Wales Tiday, she moved over to the Trust last year (I think its that one LOL)

I have worked for the Herefordshire Nature Trust ( the Wildlife trust here...)

as well as the RSPB...

Wildlife Trusts/RSPB are great everywhere, aren't they!

There are plans on the web so you can build your own bat detector!

Sorry! Don't know Cathie, but it was a few years ago that I was there. I do still speak to them and visit their offices occasionally, so if I bump into her, I'll say Hi!

We see bats regularly around dusk up here in the Midlands. In fact I was at a mate's house warming party last week and the bats were flying to and fro all over the place whilst we were in the back garden trying to spot satellites (give a bunch geeks and techies the night sky and we ignore the wildlife next to us and stare at dots in earth orbit! ).

Well haven't seen any bats but it has been raining for most of the past week or two!!

At the shark watch there was a distinct lack of sharks but it was a stunnign spot and now we know where it is we shall go back and have another go!

We have just walked from Hells Mouth to Godrevy Head as I heard talk there was a seal haul out site there...

Oh my!!! There is.

I was almost in tears it was so amazing. 75+ seals and pups lying on the beach...far away from idiot humans..it is in a very sheltered cove with sheer cliffs all around and rocks around the entrance. Seals were playing in the surf and play fighting..there were big ones, little ones, furry pups, it was truly amazing!!

Can't wait to go back..and am sure my esteemed visitors will love it too when they get here!!

MrCJ took some pics I will post them if they turn out OK
