Really late to the party, but Ursula Le Guin's Always Coming Home has been on my "grab it if there's a fire" list of books, and not just because I've got a first edition with the cassette of music.
The Wikipedia entry's accurate as these things go, but the problem of overpopulation has rather been solved for the Kesh by a low rate of conception and high miscarriage/infant mortality rate due to environmental damage. More people are lost to two major inherited neurological disorders, and medical care is geared more towards relief from pain than prolongation of life.
Still, if someone said "Amalie, pick a post-apocalyptic world to live in", I'd go to the Valley in a heartbeat.
