I don't like the yahoo groups format at all but it freecycle seems good from my one experience of getting a wardrobe. Though I think I only got it due to some else not turning up! I'll probably list some things on there soon so I'll see how that works!

Do you know what, I don't know if it's just been the posts in the last few days on our local groups, but I suddenly can't bear to receive all the 'wanteds' emails, so I've asked to stop receiving them. In future, I'll go on only when I have a specific offer to give.
There was one tonight from someone in St Agnes, which is a pretty posh place (although, obviously not everyone there is wealthy), which straight-out asked for a TV - but it had to be a flat screen, at least 28" and with a stand.
So if someone had a measly 22" telly to give away, they could stuff it up their @rse, then. Our 'Natalie' knows what she wants, and more importantly what she DESERVES, as her divine right. Give her a decent telly, or don't waste her time.
Gaaaaaaaaahhh.
I'm on the wrong thread here, aren't I?
Sorry - actually had a rather wonderful day at work, and am promised roast figs stuffed with goat cheese as tea tonight. I am actually in a good mood......

I'm a member but I do find the format of yahoo groups frustrating. I also find that you only really get the good stuff if your one of those people who can sit on there email all day. Saying that I've got loads of seedlings, slabs, wood and bricks for my alotment from there.

The Bury Freecycle group has recently changed it's name to Freegle
I've only managed to get one thing from there. Most people, I've found, don't even reply. It's also very tricky if you don't have a car to go pick stuff up. Even when I've offered to pay for petrol I don't even get a reply back!
I still look though, just in case

A new one started here called Eirecycle. Problem is it's for the whole of Ireland and not exactly local! I'm sick of the wanted ads too right now. There's tons of them and not just the ones looking for obsolete mobile phone chargers which is fair enough. Been a lot of laptop requests recently...

I have had varying success with it!! I managed to get rid of a car dog guard really quickly, but a good metal action sofa bed ended up in the tip!!! I was really quite angry because we had about 4 or 5 responses and when I emailed the first one to say they could have it and no response, I tried them all to no avail!! It seemed such a waste but we had to get rid of it somewhere, so the tip it was!!
I have not used it since because the yahoo format is frustrating, the local charity shops have just been the reciever of much unwanted but still useable stuff.
I really like the whole idea and as we are expecting our first baby I wont give up just yet!! Maybe there's still hope it will sway my mind

The freecycle in Oxford was ok when there were about 10 000 members, now there are 30 000 and its so busy people say they want what you're offering even before they have read the post properly. I found that asking for telephone numbers in the posting helps people commit, however I dont use it anymore as people can be so rude. We also have a free local swap shop held once a month which is great, and also a furniture store which collects for free and sells on to people on benefits. People will always ask for expensive stuff though as as on an early episode of the Gadget Show (ch5) they picked up a month-old unwanted computer. There is unfortunately no adequate way of dealing with unwanted electrical items unless its freecycled.

Big article in The Ecologist e-newsletter that came in this PM, titled What went wrong with Freecycle in the UK?
http://www.theecologist.org/News/news_analysis/329180/what_went_wrong_with_freecycle_in_the_uk.html
So we're not just imagining it!

well the group I belong to has done the Freegle thing too
Its full of scroungers all wanting impossible stuff, with the stories about how hard up they are...
and the ones who say "yes please but I dont have car, I want it delivered" (fraid I ignore those but might resort to rudeness one day)
but they will take all sorts of odd things, even stuff that is broken! I've used it to off load chestnut paling fence, a broken lawnmower, a broken workbench, a lawn watering thing etc
so possibly a good thing on the whole, if irritating at times
