Spotted this on the bbc website. After having to quit school at 14 William Kamkwamba continued to educate himself at a library. He found a picture of a windmill and built one out of junk and has transformed his village. Amazing what can be achieved with a bit of determination!

Excellent story! Wish I could be as inventive.

They've never seen a windmill, use oil lamps and yet all have mobile phones?
I was privileged to be driven round District Six in 1983. This was a township made of corrugated tin and mud floors near Cape Town. These some 50,000 people lived in penury, the streets ran with waste water and foul waste, but all had colour tellies.
Interesting take on the essentials in life!
He's a clever lad, and his project reminds me of the children's roundabouts that pump village water out of the ground!

My mother has not long returned from India, where she had been on a wildlife tour.
She went through really outback places where she said they had not electricity or water supplies, but she was surprised by the amount of mobile phones in these places.
